Senator Frederica Wilson on the loss of Father Gerard Jean-Juste:
“He was Haiti’s Martin Luther King Jr.”
Miami Gardens – “He was a fighter, an unparalleled crusader against injustice,” said Senator Wilson. “He was a leader whose loss will be felt forever and whose shoes can never be filled.”
Senator Wilson continued, “I first met Father Jean-Juste in the early 1980s and worked with him and then-US Senator Lawton Chiles for the release of Haitian refugees from the Krome Detention Center. From the first moment anyone ever met him, there was no doubt you were in the presence of someone special, someone who would not rest until wrongs were righted.”
In 2007, Senator Wilson’s 5000 Role Models of Excellence Program recognized Father Gerard Jean-Juste with the organization’s Spirit of Freedom Award.
